1984 book sales george orwell '1984' book sales jump after NSA scandals come to lightIf there’s one good thing to come out of the recent National Security Administration surveillance scandal, it could be that it’s gotten people to read.

According to Amazon’s Movers & Shakers page, George Owell‘s dystopic novel “1984,” which imagines a world held captive by a totalitarian dictator known as “Big Brother,” has seen sales of at least three editions skyrocket in recent days. Sales of the Centennial Edition increased by more than 4,000 percent as of Tuesday afternoon (June 11).

With Google searches increasing for the book, as well as President Obama referencing the book in a speech defending the NSA’s Internet surveillance program, it would seem current events have brought the book back to a peak of relevance. However, the novel also celebrated its 60th anniversary on June 6, which also could have triggered a rise in sales.

Either way, people are reading. Let’s focus on that small victory.
