Apolo Anton Ohno’s lucky number is seven at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The short track speed skater won a bronze medal, his seventh Olympics medal ever, Saturday (Feb. 20) in the 1,000-meter race, a win catapulted him into the record books.
He now boasts the most medals earned by an American in Winter Olympics history. The previous record holder was Bonnie Blair, a long track speed skater.
It was a hard-earned prize. Ohno lost the gold and silver to South Korean rivals Lee Jung-Su and Lee Ho-Suk, respectively. South Korea and Ohno have a longstanding rivalry that stems back to the 2002 Olympics 1500 m when first-place finisher Kim Dong-Sung was disqualified for blocking Ohno, who went on to take the gold.
Since then, the South Koreans have vilified Ohno, painting him as overly aggressive. The competition in Vancouver continues to be fierce between both parties.
Next up for Ohno in Vancouver is the 5000 m relay.
