2012 emmys final ratings gi 2012 Emmy Awards up in viewers, down in demographics from last yearAlthough the fast national ratings for Sunday’s (Sept. 23) Emmy Awards looked pretty bleak, things got brighter after adjustments to account for the live broadcast.

Updated figures from Nielsen put the Emmy telecast at 13.2 million viewers, up from 12.4 million in 2011, when the awards aired on FOX. The show’s adults 18-49 numbers, however, fell some, dropping from 4.2 last year to 3.8 on Sunday. That ties with the 2008 awards (also on ABC) as the Emmys’ lowest rating ever in the demographic.

The Emmys, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, faced a little more competition than usual this year. A high-profile “Sunday Night Football” game between the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots led the night for NBC, and CBS’ late-afternoon NFL games pushed past 8 p.m. ET, thereby putting “60 Minutes” opposite the early part of the Emmy telecast.

Still, the drop in 18-49 ratings is not good for the show. The Emmys had rebounded a little since their historic lows four years ago and had been hovering around a 4.1 or 4.2 in the demographic each year since then. ABC’s “Modern Family” and Showtime’s “Homeland” walked away with the top honors of the night.
