oscars-kodak-theatre.jpgThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday (Dec. 310 that the deadline for nomination voting has been extended by one day to Friday, Jan. 4 at 5 p.m. PT.

“By extending the voting deadline we are providing every opportunity available to make the transition to online balloting as smooth as possible,” Ric Robertson, Academy COO said in a statement. “We’re grateful to our global membership for joining us in this process.”

This is the first year the Academy has allowed members to vote online and according to reports the process has not been an entirely smooth one. The Hollywood Reporter even claimed that some Academy members are concerned that a certain number of voters won’t even cast a ballot due to technical difficulties.

By extending the deadline, the Academy appears to be listening to members’ concerns that the voting window was too short following the New Year’s holiday. Members were also sent traditional paper ballots to submit if they choose.

The 2013 Oscar nominations will be announced on Jan. 10 at 5:30 a.m. PT. The 85th annual Academy Awards are scheduled for Feb. 24 and will air live on ABC.
