The band had performed a show in Bellflower on Saturday (July 20) and parked the van at a Comfort Inn in Downey while on the way to play a free show in Woodland Hills on Sunday. (Clearly, the band had fallen on hard times before the theft.) Hotel surveillance video, which shows a man emerging from a nearby parked car, quickly entering the van and driving off, indicates the crime occurred at about 2 am.

“Somebody just broke into it, stole our whole van with all our equipment, clothing, band gear, cellphones, everything you need when you’re on the road — all your good stuff, all your good clothes, a bunch of expensive band equipment,” singer Mike Score, the only remaining original member, tells the LA Times. “A lot of stuff that’s really irreplaceable.

Among that which was stolen? Computer hard drives containing a great amount of the work Score had done for a new solo album while on the road.

The band made it to the Woodland Hills show as scheduled, using rented equipment, but Score said the band struggled using equipment “that was totally foreign to us.”

“When they steal stuff like that,” Score adds, “they steal from people to pay to see the shows because the band is unable to play the songs as people want to hear them.” Then it’s a good thing the Woodland Hills show was free, we suppose.

A Flock of Seagulls, best known for their 1982 hit “I Ran (So Far Away),” was scheduled to return to England on Tuesday.
