ABC Family has announced a new show coming to the airwaves in fall 2014 called “Freak Out,” a hidden camera prank show that will debut during the 13 Nights of Halloween programming block the network does every October.
The half-hour series is courtesy of 495 Productions (“Jersey Shore,” “Party Down South”) and has been picked up for 14 episodes. Each episode will feature elaborate effects, makeup and actors set upon an unsuspecting mark whose fears will come to life before his or her eyes, with hidden cameras capturing every moment. The mark’s family and friends are all in on the gags, which will seem horrifyingly real until the mark realizes he or she has been pranked.
“I’m glad to get reality back on our schedule and to continue to grow our original programming,” says ABC Family president Tom Ascheim. “Scary can be funny and this series is sure to deliver the ‘sclaughing’ — the screaming and the laughing. We’re also excited to be working with 495 Productions, a company with a proven track record for delivering hugely entertaining reality series.”
