alex smith release Alex Smith release: Quarterback looking to leave 49ers before free agency report

If reports are to be believed, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is planning to ask for his release from the team before the free agent signing period begins on March 12. The 49ers are facing off against the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl on Feb. 3.

This news comes courtesy of, which calls Smith “a luxury [the 49ers] can’t afford.” The site reports that the 49ers will trade Smith when it gets the chance because he is due to earn $8.5 million in 2013, but adds that Smith is looking to get off the team before it can trade him.

A source claims that Smith is “expected to seek his release before the start of free agency.” The move is risky, as it means he’ll “be able to join any team he wants,” but also is risking losing the big bucks he’d get if the 49ers did trade his contract.

PFT writes, “Unless [the 49ers] can send him to a team for which he really wants to play, the fair move would be to let him go. He has been a loyal member of the organization since he was the first pick in the 2005 draft, and he caused no trouble when he was benched during a very good season after suffering a concussion.”
