clown getty american horror story freak show 'American Horror Story: Freak Show': Killer clown means 'terrifyingly dark' season“American Horror Story” returns in the fall with its fourth season, subtitled “Freak Show,” which the creators have said in the past is not exactly a circus or a carnival. But it will have one thing in common with them: Clowns. Cue the shudders.

The creators originally said that Season 4 would be lighter, more akin to the feel of “Coven” than to “Murder House” or “Asylum.” Apparently that has changed since they started writing it.

“I thought it was going to be light, but it’s turning out to be quite terrifyingly dark,” Ryan Murphy tells EW. “It feels much more like the ‘Asylum’ season. But look — if you have a character named the Clown Killer, it’s going to be dark.”

Murphy clarifies that it is not a killer of clowns, but a clown who kills: “The most terrifying clown ever!”

He also says “Freak Show” will have the “AHS” version of the bearded lady.

If the pattern holds, “American Horror Story: Freak Show” will premiere sometime in October on FX.
