Who ever thought Motown could sound as angry as Nirvana?

Casey Abrams, on the heels of last week’s ill-received take on “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” was looking for redemption on “American Idol’s” Motown Night.

His chosen song: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” And unlike Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Abrams seemed more incensed than sensitive during the song about overheard philandering.

Abrams delivered his now-trademark shout-singing with a few accusatory points into the audience, and though it was a bit underwhelming given all the expectations, he did deliver a solid performance.

The judges praised his unique style, with Randy Jackson (who’s apparently been watching “Jersey Shore”) perhaps the most flattering. “You are a true original,” he says. “You take chances. You do you. You can only do you and that you is great.”
