mk nobilette american idol top 13 openly gay contestant 'American Idol's' first openly gay contestant MK Nobilette 'proud to be a role model'Even before landing a spot in the “American Idol” Top 13, MK Nobilette made history: She’s the first openly gay contestant to appear on the show. Sure, there have been gay contestants before (Adam Lambert, anyone?), but no one before Nobilette ever spoke about their sexuality on the show.

“I didn’t intend for it to be blown up, but I’m not opposed,” Nobilette tells Zap2it after America voted her in to the Season 13 Top 13. “I am very proud to be a role model to younger queer people. I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback and it’s actually turned out for the better. I see no reason to hide it. I’m proud to be gay and I don’t see why that would be something to hide.”

The only reason it came up, though, was because the judges mentioned that she was very different from the other contestants in the competition. “They had pointed out that I’m different from the other contestants, and that’s when I said I’m gay because that’s what makes me different.”

A San Francisco native, Nobilette says she’s happy to pave the way for future “Idol” singers. “I think it was an appropriate year for that to happen on the show — but I think it could’ve happened sooner also.”
