Andrew Garfield is currently donning the iconic red and blue suit during production for his upcoming movie, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” and he’s got some interesting ideas for his titular character that is raising a lot of eyebrows.
The man behind the most recent incarnation of Peter Parker had a philosophical discussion with producer Matt Tolmach about Spider-Man’s love Mary Jane. “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” Garfield tells EW. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! … So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
That’s certainly a new route Peter could take, though it does stray wildly from Spider-Man’s comic book origins. But who would Peter discover his homosexuality with? Garfield has an answer for that as well.
“I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since ‘The Wire.’ He’s so charismatic and talented,” Garfield says. “It’d be even better — we’d have interracial bisexuality!”
While this creative love story sounds like a winner to us, we know it won’t be featured in the upcoming sequel, set to hit theaters April 17, 2014. But that didn’t stop Garfield from trying to lobby for it with director Marc Webb anyways. When EW brought up the idea to Webb, he replied, “Michael B. Jordan, I know.” Sounds like this is a well-worn topic between Garfield and his director … maybe we’ll see it come to life in the third “Spider-Man” film!
