Ann Curry was the first member of the American press to interview Iran president Hassan Rouhani since his election. The pair sat down for an interview that ran on NBC Nightly News on Sept. 18, and in portions on “Today” on Sept. 19.

During the chat, Rouhani says that “commission for citizens’ rights” will be established “in the near future.” “We want the people in their private life to be completely free. In today’s world, having access to information and the right of free dialogue and the right to think freely is the right of all people, including the people of Iran,” Rouhani explains.

Rouhani claims that Iran has “never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb and we are not going to do so.” Curry asks, “Can you say that Iran will not build a nuclear weapon under any circumstances whatsoever?” Rouhani responds, “The answer to this question is quite obvious. We have time and against said that under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we ever … We solely are looking for peaceful nuclear technology.”
