barack obama skeet shooting fake camp david new republic water gun Barack Obama skeet shooting photo a fake Marsha Blackburn calls for showdownThe latest uproar in the gun control debate is not about the Sandy Hook massacre — it’s about Barack Obama‘s own alleged gun hobby.

The president gave an interview to The New Republic, and made an attempt to cozy up to members of his constituency whose “dad gave you a hunting rifle when you were ten, and you went out and spent the day with him and your uncles.” He tells the magazine, “Up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time.”

When critics questioned Obama’s claim that he’s an avid skeet shooter, New Republic tweeted a photo with the caption, “Obama shooting skeet at Camp David.” The tweet indicated the photo was from the White House’ official website. The only problem? The photo was a fake. There is no photo on the White House’ website of Obama shooting skeet at Camp David, but there is a photo of him running around the pool shooting a water gun.

The Weekly Standard reports the tweet was removed within minutes, and The New Republic quickly recanted. “We see it! We see it! Not the White House!,” said one New Republic tweet. It was followed minutes later by an apology, “OK, everyone. Apologies. Twitter sometimes leads to quick accidents.”

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked by reporters how often the president participates in this newly reported gun hobby. “I don’t know how often,” he answers. “He does go to Camp David with some regularity, but I’m not sure how often he’s done that.” Carney was unable to confirm whether any photos exist of Obama shooting skeet.

Speaking to CNN, Tennessee congresswoman Marsha Blackburn — vocal among the skeet shooting skeptics — challenged Mr. Obama to prove not only his hobby, but also his skill level. “I think he should invite me to Camp David, and I’ll go skeet shooting with him and I bet I’ll beat him,” says Blackburn.
