obama game of thrones breaking bad Barack Obama's favorite TV: 'Game of Thrones,' 'Breaking Bad' and other great dramas

“Game of Thrones,” “Breaking Bad,” “Mad Men,” “House of Cards,” “Homeland” and “Downton Abbey” all have something in common beyond frequently gracing lists of the best dramas on TV: They’re all among President Barack Obama‘s favorite TV shows.

The New York Times looks back at Obama’s comments over the past few years and sees a trend in the shows that he prefers. Basically, “anything edgy, with hints of reality” will catch the POTUS’s attention.

Apparently Obama has told people that he’s a “big fan” of “Game of Thrones,” while raving about “Boardwalk Empire” and “Downton Abbey.” His love of “Homeland” has been well-documented, as has been his love of “The Wire.” He’s watched all the DVDs of “Mad Men” and compares Elisabeth Moss‘ character, Peggy Olson, to his “strong-willed grandmother.”
Obama is currently binging a DVD box set of “Breaking Bad,” and it is said that he is “way behind and frequently reminds those around him not to give anything away.” Then there’s “House of Cards,” which strikes very close to home.

“I wish things were that ruthlessly efficient,” Obama was overheard saying to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, before adding of main character Frank Underwood, “This guy’s getting a lot of stuff done.”

One thing’s for sure: Obama has good taste — or at least he’s good at keeping abreast of critically acclaimed television. Even the family friendly shows he admits to watching — “Modern Family” and “Parks and Recreation” — are among the best of the best comedies currently airing. With this strong lineup of TV shows listed as his favorites, who knows where his loyalties lie in the Best Drama category at the 2014 Golden Globes.
