bates motel season 2 promo 'Bates Motel' Season 2: The drug trade will be Romero's main conflict

“Bates Motel” returns in less than a month with Season 2, and now viewers are getting more and more details about what to expect. Nestor Carbonell, who plays Sheriff Romero, reveals that the drug trade in White Pine Bay, Ore. becomes a central plot point this year — at least for his character.

“In the second season, there’s more of a window into his dilemma, trying to straddle that world — on one hand feeling like he has to uphold the law and on the other hand knowing that this town is really stained by this illicit drug trade, and trying to navigate those two,” Carbonell tells Digital Spy.

He elaborates, “There’s two families at the heart of the drug trade and we’re introduced to both of them and the conflicts between the two of them. I’m sort of caught in the middle — my position within the town is exposed fairly quickly and you’ll see how I have to navigate between these two families … and somehow maintain my integrity.”

Carbonell also shares that Romero’s relationship with Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) will get more complicated in Season 2.

“They’re both control freaks — their heads continue to butt as they have to deal with each other more and more. So that will definitely continue in a bigger way this second season, especially towards the second half of the season,” he says. “It’s going to get more and more complicated as he gets more involved with her life. You’ll see further topics in the second season that bring them together — for better or worse — and complicate both of their lives.”

According to Carbonell, the mystery of Romero’s personality is similar to that of his “Lost” character, Richard Alpert. He reveals that he’s made up his own backstory for Romero, but also has a few nuggets of real information.

“I definitely know a few things, but not too much,” he says. “But I love inventing my own history and backstory, wondering if I’ve guessed correctly as we go along. It’s a challenge as an actor and I really love that.”

“Bates Motel” returns to A&E with Season 2 on March 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
