bates motel romero norma romance vera farmiga nestor carbonell ae 'Bates Motel' Season 3: Vera Farmiga wants a 'simmering' Norma and Romero romanceNorma Bates has had nothing but bad luck in relationships on “Bates Motel,” and for viewers who know where her story in “Psycho” ends, that track record isn’t likely to change any time soon. But that doesn’t stop fans from itching for a relationship between Vera Farmiga’s Norma and Nestor Carbonell’s Sheriff Romero.

Both Carbonell and Farmiga are intrigued by the idea, they tell Zap2it during a San Diego Comic-Con 2014 group interview. “I know a lot of people are eager to explore that, and I am, but I want them to do that in a way that is simmering,” Farmiga says.
There were some teases of a possible romantic interest between the two in Season 2, and Farmiga found it “sexy” because Romero “never says anything.” “He’s a man of very few words, and then he opens his mouth and lets the fact that he’s been watching me undress just roll out, without apology,” Farmiga says. “I look forward to where they take it.”
Carbonell knows little about “Bates Motel” Season 3, but does reveal it will explore more of Romero’s history. When describing his character’s relationship with Norma’s son Dylan, he says Romero views him as a son, while Romero views Norman more like a child that he might adopt. That viewpoint definitely makes it sound like Romero could take on a more paternal role in the Bates family.

“I think the writers are open to it. As long as [Norma] keeps misbehaving, I’ll be chasing her,” Carbonell says with a laugh. “I think he fancies himself a guy who can do it all. He’s got a big opinion of himself.”
Romero doesn’t know the truth about Norman Bates being a psycho, but Carbonell doesn’t think that he would try to bring Norman down if he did know. “If anything, I think if he discovers that Norman is as messed up as we all know him to be, I think he probably thinks that he can ‘fix him,’ which is really quite pathetic,” Carbonell says.

Whatever happens between Norma and Romero, Farmiga just wants the writers to keep the audience “wanting more.”
“I just want them to take their time with that because they are both two very guarded people and both very controlling, and that’s why it’s so exciting to watch,” she says. “It’s this game of tug-of-war, and so you’ve got these two very willful, very controlling people holding this rope filled with tension. As soon as someone lessens the tension, the game’s going to be over.”
“Bates Motel” Season 3 is slated to premiere in 2015.
