Ben Affleck will suit up as the Caped Crusader in the followup to “Man of Steel.” The announcement was made Thursday (August 22) by Warner Bros. He will join Henry Cavill, who is returning as Superman. Like “Man of Steel,” the sequel will be directed by Zack Snyder.
The news of a “Batman vs. Superman” movie was first revealed at Comic-Con, during the Warner Bros./Legendary panel. After a short passage from Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” was read, the movie’s logo was unveiled. The Batman symbol used was similar to the one worn by Miller’s Bruce Wayne, leading people to wonder if they’d cast an older Batman to face off against a young Superman.
In the announcement, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman says, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some.” Snyder says of Affleck taking the role, “He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.”
This isn’t Affleck’s first journey into the comic book world. Back in 2003, the actor wore red leather for “Daredevil.” He also portrayed George Reeves in the 2006 movie “Hollywoodland.” Reeves played Superman on TV during the 1950s.

The movie, currently untitled, is set for a July 17, 2015 release.
