billy bob thorton fargo gi Billy Bob Thornton starring in FX's 'Fargo' miniseriesFX has landed Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton for its limited series “Fargo,” based on the Coen brothers movie of the same name.

Thornton will play a character named Lorne Malvo, a “rootless, manipulative man” who sets the show’s story in motion when he meets up with a small-town insurance salesman.

Thornton’s closest analog in Coen brothers’ movie “Fargo” is probably Steve Buscemi‘s character, but FX CEO John Landgraf told reporters Friday (Aug. 2) at the TCA press tour that the series isn’t really a remake of the film.

“There are no characters in the limited series ‘Fargo’ that are derived from the characters in the film ‘Fargo,'” Landgraf says. “But the show — it’s hard to describe how remarkably true to the film it is. When Joel and Ethan Coen actually saw the script, they said we don’t really know how to give notes, so can we rewrite it? We were like, sure, we’d be happy to have you. They sent back, I don’t know, half a dozen pages with just a few dialogue suggestions. They really thought that [writer] Noah Hawley had nailed the tone of the show.”

Landgraf also notes that there will be a female cop character in the series, but she’s a young deputy rather than the sheriff.

“All I can tell you is I think people are going to be really entranced by the show,” Landgraf says. “I think it’s going to be extraordinary. [Hawley] has just managed somehow to invent a new version of ‘Fargo’ that is really its own thing but is also true to the spirit of the original.”

“Fargo” starts production in the fall and is set to air on FX next spring.
