ron livingston boardwalk empire newscom 325 'Boardwalk Empire' Season 4 brings Ron Livingston from 'Sex and the City' to the Jersey ShoreZap2it: In Season 4 of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” premiering Sunday, Sept. 8, it’s 1924 in Atlantic City, N.J. You play Roy Phillips, an out-of-town businessman who arrives in the town, now firmly under the thumb of politician and bootlegger “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi). What brings Phillips to the Jersey Shore?

Ron Livingston: He’s a grocery store exec from out of town, and they’re expanding to the East Coast. It’s where corporate America is now going to step in and try to take its cut of what’s going on. The first thing he does is strike up a friendship with [former showgirl and madam] Gillian Darmody. And they have a bit of an involvement.

Zap2it: What’s it like working with Gretchen Mol, who plays Gillian?

Ron Livingston: She’s had a lot of men on this show, but I’m not sure she’s gotten a love interest. It’s going to be a chance to see another side of her. Gretchen is fantastic. She’s a wonderful actress, lovely person; she couldn’t be sweeter. I’m tellin’ ya, it’s nice duty.

Zap2it: One article about you coming to “Boardwalk” called you “Carrie’s ex-boyfriend,” referring to your “Sex and the City” role opposite Sarah Jessica Parker. How do you feel about that?

Ron Livingston: That show ran for a lot of seasons, so that describes a lot of people. I don’t think there’s an actor in New York who didn’t either die on a “Law & Order” or wasn’t one of Carrie’s boyfriends. She found love eventually, but it took a while.
