monsters university white house down box office Box office: 'Monsters University' remains strong, 'White House Down' disappoints

“Monsters University” is still going strong. Pixar’s latest remains at the top of the box office in the second week of its release, raking in $46.2 million during this past weekend to bring its domestic total up to $171 million.

Coming in close behind it is the Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy buddy cop comedy “The Heat.” That flick pulled in $40.0 million opening weekend, which is a significant amount more than director Paul Feig‘s last feature, “Bridesmaids.” At this rate, “The Heat” could go on to top “Bridesmaids'” $169.1 million domestic run.

It turns out that Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx‘s “White House Down” couldn’t stand the heat, because the flick slipped down to fourth place in its first weekend of release. That’s not a strong start for the action film, which reportedly cost $150 million to make.

“World War Z” managed to snag the third place spot in its second week of release, bringing its domestic total up to $123.7 million. It’s also grossed $135.3 million worldwide.

Here are the box office numbers for the weekend of June 29:
