the butler box office oprah Box Office: Oprah and 'The Butler' beat 'Kick Ass 2' on Friday

The star power of Lee Daniels‘ latest film “The Butler” looks like it will carry the biopic through to a strong opening weekend. The movie beat out its competition — comic book sequel “Kick-Ass 2,” Jennifer Aniston comedy “We’re The Millers” and Matt Damon sci-fi epic “Elysium” — to snag Friday’s No. 1 spot with an $8.3 million opening day.

That’s an impressive boost from the opening day of Daniels’ biggest film, “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” That movie made $10.8 million the weekend it opened nationwide, and it was boosted by the star power of Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Mo’Nique. “The Butler” has a similar wide array of stars, but leading man Forest Whitaker and a massive supporting cast including Robin Williams, John Cusack, Oprah Winfrey and both Carey and Kravitz again make it a much more appealing option.

Between tepid reviews and a crowded comic book movie landscape, “Kick-Ass 2” didn’t make as solid an outing as Universal Studios likely hoped. The movie only made $5.8 million opening day, which was down from the $7.65 million “Kick-Ass” made on its opening day in 2010. That film snagged the No. 1 spot in the first weekend of its release, though it only beat out “How to Train Your Dragon” (which had already been out for a month) by less than $200,000. It doesn’t look like “Kick-Ass 2” will have the same luck.
