sherlock holmes game of shadows Box Office: 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' clear winner for the weekendWith three new sequels opening this weekend, the industry is hoping that last weekend’s painfully quiet Box Office will show improvement — and it will.

At No. 1 “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” scored an estimated $14.7 million on opening day — $1.25 million of that coming in from midnight showings on Thursday night. Though this doesn’t necessarily make “Sherlock” the blockbuster that the original was, there’s a strong chance that the word-of-mouth on this one will keep it considerably successful through the holiday season.

The latest “Alvin and the Chipmunks” sequel, “Chipwrecked,” is one of few (mostly) animated films this year that does not have a 3-D option, but that seems to be working for family audiences. The movie drew $6.8 million on Friday night to come in second place, and of course as a family-friendly film, it’s likely to pick up the pace throughout the weekend with matinee showings and the Saturday night crowd.

As for Tom Cruise‘s most recent “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” which was well-reviewed, numbers are coming in high. Opening this weekend in only 425 theaters (300 of which are of the IMAX variety), the “MI” sequel still raked in $1.1 million at midnight and a total of $4.1 million for Friday.
