During a segment on Thursday’s edition of “NBC Nightly News,” NBC medical correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman spoke with Williams about his injury.

“I took a helmet to the knee in high school,” Williams says. “It reversed my knee — they don’t recommend that. I have been in pain for 35 years. I loved playing a team sport. I loved every minute of football.” The longtime anchor adds that the pain he feels has begun “costing [him] sleep.” The elective surgery will be on Williams’ right knee.

While Williams recovers from his surgery, Lester Holt will fill his chair at the “Nightly News” desk. Holt is the current co-anchor of the weekend edition of “Today” and also serves as the weekend anchor for “Nightly News.”
