brothers-&-sisters-luc-sarah.jpgIn this episode of “Brothers & Sisters,” the family experiences some growing pains as they learn how to deal with life’s recent changes.

Sarah and Luc are going to spend some time at Nora’s place and they bring Cooper along. Little Cooper has done some growing up and he has a big, bratty mouth to prove it. It seems he has some trouble with Luc stepping into their lives and he’s not shy about showing his dislike for Sarah’s new beau. Luc isn’t happy that Sarah isn’t doing more to punish Cooper for his bad behavior, so there seems to be some friction going on between the couple.

Also, Cooper is fascinated with the drilling Ojai is doing at Narrow Lake. The company is selling land at this point to continue, though they haven’t found anything yet.

Kevin is being a bit bratty, too. Saul and Scotty are talking about opening a restaurant together. It’s clear that Kevin is feeling left out. When he offers his services to look over their contracts, Scotty tells him that he hopes that he’ll be busy with other things by then. Kevin walks out in a huff to help Sarah look over some of Ojai’s drilling contracts.

We finally get some details as to Robert’s new gig. He has a meeting where the man who hired him tells him that they’re trying to catch someone named Stanton who is making a deal regarding national security, which will put a lot of money in his pocket. Robert is to catch him cheating. The man wants Robert to go to a charity benefit Stanton is throwing the next day.

During the meeting, Kitty calls from the road. She’s trying to get endorsements from key figures and wants Robert’s insight. When they get off the phone, the man tells Robert that Kitty doesn’t stand a chance with the Republican Right against her. Robert tells his new boss that he should never underestimate Kitty. Regardless, Robert is afraid of harming her campaign if it gets out that he’s working against Stanton.

War memories
Meanwhile, Rebecca still has her sights set on buying that bungalow house she brought up in the last episode. Does she have some stashed money that we don’t know about? Justin decides to stay home and make a meal for the widow of his military friend. Rebecca senses something is wrong with him, but he doesn’t fess up. She’s going to freak out when she finds out he’s entertaining reenlisting into the military.

Justin gives up on his lone mission to make a meal and goes over to Nora’s place. After he ruins Cooper’s sensitivity to killing with a video game and some war stories, he guilts Nora into helping him make the soup. While they’re cooking, he mentions Rebecca has gone over to look at the bungalow. Nora thinks it’s a good idea, but Justin emphasizes that she’s just looking. Then, Nora notices that Justin is wearing his dog tags, which he claims he found when he was pulling his military uniform out for the funeral. She realizes that his friend’s death has hit him hard and wonders if he’s going to his addiction meetings. He says he is, and then she suggests that he can take his dog tags off, but Justin ignores her as he carries on making the soup. Uh, oh. Nora isn’t going to let this one go, is she?

brothers-&-sisters-holly-rebecca.jpgRebecca has gone over to Holly’s place to show her the pictures of the bungalow she has fallen in love with. Holly tells her she should take some of her money back from Ojai and place an offer on the house. Rebecca thinks that might be a good idea. Wait a second, didn’t Sarah just say Ojai is selling land to fund the drilling? Isn’t Rebecca’s money being used?

Then, Justin comes home and Rebecca has some news for him: She put down an offer on the house! He freaks out and says he’s in disbelief she would do that when he hasn’t even checked it out first. Even though she tells him that she won’t buy it if he doesn’t like it, Justin goes off on how he can’t handle this right now. He’s still dealing with his friend’s death and he continues to live this comfortable life. She tells him that she won’t be shamed for thinking about having a comfortable future with him. At that, he walks out.

Kevin lands at Nora’s place where everyone lands, of course. He tells Sarah that the contracts look fine and now he’s just biding time. Then, Robert arrives with the baby and he tells them about the tennis tournament the next day. This is when we’re introduced to Kevrah, the mixed doubles tennis legend that was Kevin and Sarah. Why couldn’t we flash back to that scene? The two decide to join the tournament, but then Nora convinces Sarah that it may be better that she team up with Luc. That way they can get some “adult time.” Sarah doesn’t seem enthused by playing with Luc and breaking up Kev-rah, Kev-rah, Kev-rah.

Later, Sarah is livid that Cooper has jumped into Nora’s pool with his clothes on. Luc then arrives to give him a towel and she realizes that he knew. Luc says that Cooper told him he’d wait until Luc got back before he went into the water. She then wonders why he was outside to begin with. Cooper rats out Nora for telling him to get off the video games and go outside. Sarah isn’t pleased about that and wished Nora would have just let him play video games. Nora tells her that she doesn’t think the games are good for him, especially with his misbehaving lately. Sarah defends Cooper and looks to Luc for back up, but he agrees with Nora. Isn’t it annoying to watch Sarah let herself be so manipulated by Cooper?

At tennis practice later, the teams aren’t gelling that well. Kevin won’t let down on Robert’s enjoyment of his more relaxed life. Sarah has brought her anger with Luc to the court. After much back and forth (hah, pun), Robert suggests that the teams switch partners.

When Kevin gets home, he has some war stories himself from the tennis courts. He tells Saul and Scotty that his new passion is tennis and that unemployment is not that bad after all.

The big match
On the day of the big tennis match, Team Kevrah has the best warm-up routine I’ve ever seen. So funny! During which, Sarah mentions that she’s worried that Cooper’s play date was cancelled and Nora may not be able to manage him at the game.

Meanwhile, Robert meets Stanton in the country club’s bar and it’s probably the most uncomfortable meeting I’ve ever seen. They were cordial, smiled and said things to each other just as they should, but there was this underlying tension between the two. Kevin ended up seeing them chatting. Right before their match, he tells Robert that he shouldn’t be speaking to Stanton, because he’s the enemy. Robert tells him they just ran into each other. Uh, huh.

In the bleachers, Cooper isn’t behaving and Nora tries everything to keep him still. When he starts to pretend shoot people, Sarah gets distracted. Then, he gets his hands on some extra tennis balls and begins throwing them toward Luc. Then, Sarah tells Luc she can handle it and that he should basically butt out. She knows both Cooper and his father are not cool about Luc. He tells her that she has to do something about Cooper’s behavior toward him and wonders how he fits into the picture now. Then, Cooper launches another ball at Luc’s head. At that point, Sarah grabs the kid and walks off with him, telling Kevin that they’re going to need to forfeit.

When Nora goes to get Justin to leave, he senses some ani
mosity and asks her if she’s mad at him. She says no, it’s more like she’s on to him. She then tells him she knows he’s contemplating returning to the service and she’s not happy about it. She wonders why when his life seems to be finally falling into order, especially since he was almost killed in his last tour of duty.

Later that night, Scotty arrives to find Kevin lying on the couch. He apologizes for not paying much attention to him lately. Kevin apologizes for acting like such a child. In the end they realize Kevin is feeling anxious, because he doesn’t know what his purpose is anymore.

On the mend
Over at Nora’s place, Sarah has a talk with Cooper about how he’s treating Luc. She tells him that she loves Luc and when he hurts him, he’s hurting her. After Cooper leaves, Luc says that it’s time to deal with whatever is bothering Sarah. She admits that now that Luc is sticking around, she’s afraid he may have a hard time dealing with the real world, like her kids. Plus, she can handle him breaking her heart, but not theirs. He tells her that he loves her and he’s not going to break anyone’s hearts. He wants to be her partner, he says, and a role model to the kids. And scene. This was a heavy one.

Then Robert comes over and Nora asks him if Justin has said anything about wanting to return to war and he says yes. She tells him that she doesn’t want her son to go to war again, but Robert says that the pull on Justin may be too strong.

Back at their place, Kitty arrives home and tells Robert that she got the endorsements she was looking for. Of course she did. Kitty gets everything she wants (and it’s getting a bit boring).

Over at Justin’s, it seems Nora’s talk may have sunk in. When he arrives, he takes off his dog tags. Then, Rebecca arrives and he tells her that he has been thinking about his time in the military and how he felt like he was part of a team. He then tells her that she’s the only thing that works for him, but he wants to feel like part of something else, too. Bottom line: It doesn’t sound like he’s going back to war. Phew. It does sound like he’s going to drop out med school, though.

The next day, Sarah finds her mother in the pantry, thinking. Nora tells Sarah that mothering never gets easy even when they’re grown. Well, that’s uplifting. Sarah then shows her something that makes her feel better. Luc and Cooper bonding over practicing martial arts together or as Sarah calls it, they’re having a relationship.

Do you think Robert’s job is going to backfire on Kitty’s senate race?
