carrie underwood animal rights ag gag Carrie Underwood tweets outrage at Tennessee 'ag gag' bill“Ag gag” bills are a hot-button topic in farming states these days. They’ve been around for over 20 years, but have only recently begun to get national attention. Among the various provisions, the crux of the issue is that these bills prohibit making undercover videos at agricultural sites. Opponents of the bills argue that it will help farms and the like to continue hiding animal cruelty or food and labor safety violations.

Kansas, Montana and North Dakota have had these “ag gag” bills in place since the early 1990s, but last year Iowa passed one and Tennessee just passed one last week. One Tennessee resident who is not pleased is singer Carrie Underwood, a known animal rights supporter.

“Shame on TN lawmakers for passing the Ag Gag bill,” tweets Underwood. “If Gov. Bill Haslam
signs this, he needs to expect me at his front door. Who’s with me?”

State Rep. Andy Holt, R-Dresden responds, “I would say that if Carrie Underwood will stick to singing, I’ll stick to lawmaking.”

Underwood fires back, “I should stick to singing? Wow…sorry, I’m just a tax paying citizen concerned for the safety of my family,” and tweets out a link to an ASPCA action alert against the bill.
