ted danson elisabeth harnois csi spinoff cbs CBS orders 'CSI' spinoff pilot: Cyber crimes themed project to air in springCBS has their franchise-making machine working overtime this pilot season. Not only are “NCIS: New Orleans” and “How I Met Your Dad” in the works for fall consideration, but the network is once again turning to “CSI” for a possible spinoff.

The long-running crime procedural, which famously spawned two now-canceled series (“CSI: Miami” and “CSI: NY”), will try once again to birth a new hit with a planted spinoff, set to air as an episode of the drama this spring, THR reports. Departing from the usual focus of criminal forensics, the new series will focus instead on cyber crimes.

Inspired by the work of Irish cyber-psychologist Mary Aiken, the project centers on Avery Ryan, special agent in charge at the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI, who handles major crimes that begin in the mind, live online and work their way into the real world.

“CSI” creator Anthony E. Zuiker, longtime “CSI” showrunner Carol Mendelsohn and former “CSI: Miami” showrunner Ann Donahue will write the spinoff. With the change in focus, it’s unclear if the project will keep the “CSI” name or go by something new, as “NCIS” did when it was spun from “JAG.”

This pilot season is shaping up to be quite spinoff-heavy. Not only does CBS now have three in contention, but The CW also has “Supernatural: Tribes” and “The Flash,” spun from “Arrow,” in the works, as well.
