According to “Good Morning America,” an armed robbery at a Wendy’s turned fatal after 32-year-old Cortez Washington walked into the restaurant with a gun. Police arrived, and Dion and another “Cops” crewmember came with them.
Though Washington is said to have fired first, Dion was shot in friendly fire with a single bullet that managed to kill him despite wearing a bullet proof vest. Both Dion and Washington died of their injuries. Police later learned Washington was only armed with an air gun that shoots plastic pellets.

Langley Productions says Dion is the first “Cops” crew member to be killed in action in the show’s 25 year history. Executive producer Morgan Langley tells “GMA”: “He did something that he loved and was passionate aboutt. We’ve been very fortunate over the years — we’ve never had an incident like this. Now we’re dealing with it, and it’s a very sad day for us.”
