For the first time, a movie will premiere on Netflix on the exact same day it is released on select IMAX screens around the world. “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend,” a sequel to 2000 martial arts hit “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” is directed by Yuen Wo-Ping, best known as the martial arts choreographer of “Kill Bill 1 and 2” and “The Matrix Trilogy.”
According to a release, the new film is based on the novel “Iron Knight, Silver Vase” from the “Crane-Iron” series and features the return of Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu-Lien. Donnie Yen joins the cast as Silent Wolf.
“The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement,” producer Harvey Weinstein says in a statement. “We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.”
While this is the first original movie for Netflix, they have already made an impact with their TV programming, including “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black.”
“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend” will premiere on Netflix and select global IMAX screens on Aug. 28, 2015.
