dancing with the stars season 18 week 8 abby lee miller abc 'Dancing with the Stars': Abby Lee Miller wins few fans among pro dancers

“Dancing with the Stars” Season 18 brought in “Dance Moms” star Abby Lee Miller as a guest judge on Monday (May 5). The professional “DWTS” dancers, however, were not exactly excited about the choice.

The professional displeasure with Miller first appeared during the broadcast itself. When interviewed just after hearing Miller’s comments during judging of his rumba with Meryl Davis, Maksim Chmerkovskiy said, “I really don’t care for anything that she has to say.”
According to quotes published in The Hollywood Reporter, it’s a sentiment echoed by many of the other pros on “Dancing with the Stars”:

Derek Hough: “I’m afraid for kids who are exposed to pressure, anxiety and things like that … My fear is that they’ll get burnt out as soon as they hit 16 and they won’t want to do it again.”

Sharna Burgess: “The way she treats her children, the way she teaches them — she’s not molding anybody into a star. She’s not teaching anybody to harness any creativity. She’s trying to make good TV.”

Mark Ballas: “I still stick to what I said three years ago [about Miller] online. I don’t agree with her teaching methods. I’m 100 percent with Maks tonight.”

On “Dance Moms,” Miller uses a criticism-heavy style, complete with pyramids of excellence and lots of yelling, to train the young dancers in her classes. While very popular as a reality show, many have criticized this style of teaching.

Miller has shrugged off the criticism — mostly. “I don’t think it was hurtful to me, no sweat off of my back,” she tells E! News. “But I think it was a little disrespectful to ABC and to Dancing With the Stars and to a judge.”

The “Dancing with the Stars” Season 18 semi-finals will air Monday, May 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
