Eva Longoria, an executive producer of “Devious Maids,” does a terrific job directing the season opener Sunday (April 20), when the action picks up three months after last season’s cliffhanger.
When we last saw the women, they were settling in for a picnic in a park. Marisol (Ana Ortiz) had cleared her son from a murder rap and no longer had to pretend to be a maid, and they were celebrating — briefly.
Immigration officials nabbed Rosie (Dania Ramirez) while her employer, Peri (Mariana Klaveno), stood on the sidelines smirking. Now Rosie is in court, and her friends are there to support her.
Their chattering doesn’t endear them to the judge, but Rosie is released in good faith until the next hearing in six months.
And we get to catch up with the women.
Marisol has gone from being a maid to having one, and this new maid knows where the bodies are buried. Marisol fell in love with a rich, dashing man, Nicholas (Mark Deklin). They met in a bookstore, and she moves into his mansion.

Peri and Spence (Grant Show) are still together, but he pines for Rosie and Peri is determined to quash any happiness her husband might accidentally experience.
While Peri and Spence have a loveless marriage, the Powells, the idle rich who lob acidic barbs at each other, have been away on a cruise. They’re finally lovers again, and Evelyn (Rebecca Wisocky) is determined to keep Adrian (Tom Irwin) on a tighter leash. She hires a new maid who needs massive plastic surgery to be considered ugly.
Genevieve (Susan Lucci) is milking her latest role — almost widow. She was engaged to marry one of her former husbands but he was killed. Her reaction is to switch from a wardrobe in a limited rainbow of white, ecru and beige to all black.
“My grief is sincere,” she says. “The fact that black is slimming is merely coincidental.”
The relationship between Genevieve and her maid, Zoila (Judy Reyes), remains fun. “When was the last time you had something to eat?” Zoila asks her boss.
“I had an aspirin for breakfast,” she replies.
Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez) took her boss Alejandro (Matt Cedeno) up on his offer and is pretending to be the closeted gay singer’s fiancee. Carmen runs into problems with Alejandro’s maid and her former boss, Odessa (Melinda Page Hamilton), when Carmen starts acting like the diva she always has been.
The women seem settled in their new lives when Evelyn throws a dinner party, and someone asks why she didn’t like Rio.
“Every time we looked out our hotel window, we were confronted with the reality of human suffering,” Evelyn says.
“Finally we called the concierge and got a room facing the pool,” Adrian adds.
As they’re chatting, four masked men break in and shoot into the ceiling. They say nothing, rob the guests of their jewels and rough up Adrian. He is so terrorized by the experience that the Powells hire a security guard: a young, well-muscled man whom Evelyn cannot ignore, especially when he’s shirtless.
Marisol has little trouble adjusting to life on the other side. After all, she was never really a maid, though she was devious. A professor of literature, she’s on leave, writing a book about her experiences and setting up house with Nick.
Nick’s maid, Opal (Joanna P. Adler), a stern, disapproving woman, tells Marisol that Nick and his first wife had a horrible fight and she threw herself off a bridge in front of him.
Valentina (Edy Ganem) returns from Africa, where she had followed the love of her life, Genevieve’s son Remy (Drew Van Acker). Valentina is still so furious with her mom, Zoila, that she opts to stay in a fleabag motel rather than return home.
The maid who resembled the love child of a gargoyle and the Hulk fled the Powells after the armed robbery, and Valentina takes the vacant job. Let’s begin a countdown as to how long it will take Adrian to say something lewd.
Spence visits Rosie and their fire is instantly rekindled. Peri, quite attuned to her husband’s moods, even if she holds him in contempt, is not about to surrender. Peri tells Spence that she is pregnant then goes to her doctor and orders a pregnancy, much way one would order a coffee.
And with that, last season’s cliffhangers are tied up and the new season is off to a deliciously devious start.
