len wiseman the mummy gi Director Len Wiseman out of Universal's 'The Mummy' reboot

Universal Studios’ “The Mummy” reboot is still moving full speed ahead, but it lost the man who was at its helm. It’s being reported that Len Wiseman is off the project due to scheduling conflicts.

TheWrap has the news, saying that producers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Sean Daniels are currently hunting for a new director. Screenwriter Jon Spaihts already turned in a copy of the script, and Orci told Zap2it at San Diego Comic-Con that the plan is to shoot the film in 2014.

“We just got a great script by Jon Spaihts, and we’re hoping to be shooting that in the new year,” he said. “Our idea is to try and differentiate it from what’s come before because we love those movies and don’t want to just remake them, so how do you update it? So I think the idea is, yeah, do it now [in the present day].”

This take on “The Mummy” is supposed to be “darker” and “scarier” than the original, with the Mummy himself being fleshed out with a “human personality,” TheWrap reports. The reboot will reportedly draw inspiration from Michael Crichton‘s novels.
