The hunt is on for the Russian Yeti in a new special airing on Discovery. Zap2it can exclusively announce that the two-hour special, which will premiere on June 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, investigates the disappearance of nine college students in Russia in 1959.
The tale of “Russian Yet: The Killer Lives” is a familiar one for fans of mystery. The students were hiking up the Ural Mountains in the heart of Russia on Feb. 2, 1959, but never returned. There has never been a clear answer given for their disappearance, and many blame the “Russian Yeti.”
In the special, American explorer Mike Libecki returns to tale — known as the Dyatlov Pass incident — and gathers evidence that seems to support the suggestion that the students were killed the folk tale creature. Discovery teases that “what he uncovers is truly horrifying.”
Libecki first became intrigued by the Dyatlov Pass incident while he was on a climbing expedition in 2011. “I’ve spent a lot of time alone in the mountains and have had my share of near-death experiences,” he says in a statement. “I know if I went missing, I’d want my family to know what happened to me.”
“Russian Yet: The Killer Lives” will air on Discovery Channel on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
