The New York Daily News has come under fire for its cover photo from the Boston Marathon bombing. The paper published a picture taken by Boston Globe’s John Tlumacki, but they removed a massive wound from the photo subject’s leg in their editing process.
It was immediately one of the most circulated images from the moments following the bomb explosion — a man hunches over an injured woman, who lay in a pool of blood. Many publications used the photo without editing out the gore.
The Atlantic Wire points out the paper violated an ethical principle, as set forth by the ethics code for the National Press Photographers Association. “Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images’ content and context,” reads the code. And the blogger who first pointed out the photo manipulation, Charles Apple, writes, “If you can’t stomach the gore, don’t run the photo. Period.”
Apple’s blog has the side-by-side images for comparison.

The decision to alter the photo reportedly came down from the top, leaving many newsroom personnel embarrassed. A spokesperson for NYDN says, “The Daily News does not comment on its editorial decision-making.”
