joanne froggatt brendan coyle downton abbey 'Downton Abbey' Season 4: Anna and Bates have 'a period of happiness,' says star Joanne FroggattAt the 2013 TCA press tour, we got to sit down with Joanne Froggatt, who plays Anna on “Downton Abbey.” She teases for Zap2it that there is some happiness on the way for Anna and Bates — but it won’t be solely smooth sailing.

“There is a period of happiness which carries on and it’s lovely,” says Froggatt. “It’s nice to play the drama, that’s what I like to do, but it was really nice to see them happy as a couple.”

“They do start off Season 4 happy, but as always in ‘Downton,’ there are some trials and tribulations ahead. The usual highs and lows that we expect from all the different characters. We’ve got nice stories this year,” Froggatt adds.

With all the new babies gracing the halls of Downton Abbey, we had to wonder if there is a baby on the horizon for newly-married Anna and Bates, but Froggatt isn’t spilling.

“I couldn’t possibly say, I couldn’t possibly say,” she laughs. “That’s up to the powers that are [creator] Julian Fellowes. I wouldn’t like to make a comment on that one.”

But even if she won’t confirm nor deny a baby, Froggatt does tell us that we can look forward to all the range of emotions we’ve come to love in “Downton Abbey.”

“I can guarantee you will be laughing, you will be crying, you will be going through a range of emotions,” says Froggatt. “I’m really excited about Season 4. We’ve seen the first episode. It really makes us all incredibly proud because it’s such a strong series this year. Just even in the first episode … there’s romance, there’s a bit of grief, there’s humor, there’s people being a little cagey. I’m excited to see the reactions.”

“Downton Abbey” premieres in September on ITV in the U.K. and returns to U.S. airwaves on Jan. 5, 2014 on PBS. Stay tuned to Zap2it later Tuesday (Aug. 6) to give you all the scoop on Season 4 after we get to see a trailer for the new season at tonight’s “Downton” press tour dinner.
