“Downton Abbey” is leaving Highclere Castle and the local village for at least some of Season 5 — and it’s headed for another famous England landmark.
The Radio Times reports that Alnwick Castle, which stood in as Hogwarts in the first two “Harry Potter” films, is currently hosting some of the “Downton” cast as Season 5 filming finishes up. The official website for Alnwick has posted a notice for would-be visitors that reads: “Please note that various areas of Alnwick Castle will be closed or have
limited access on 28th July – 8th August (inclusive), due to the
filming of a major ITV period drama. … Please note that some of the State Rooms may be dressed for filming while open to the public on those days.”
Season 5 filming has to be almost wrapped, so we wonder if the annual Christmas special is once again taking the Crawley family and some of their staff to a new location, as has happened in the last two season finales. Christmastime at Hogwarts is always lovely, but hopefully someone has a time-turner on hand so Maggie Smith can act as both the Dowager Countess and Professor McGonagall.
“Downton Abbey” returns in September in the U.K. and Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015 in the U.S.
