“Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo was not impressed with either the diversity or the contemporary feel of the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards. In an interview given after the awards show, the actress said she was “really disappointed” with what she saw.

“I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all. The Emmys felt so dated to me,” Pompeo explained on Monday (Sept. 23). “That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of color in that dance number?”

This criticism didn’t spring from nowhere. During the Emmy telecast, Diahann Carroll — the actress who was the first African American person nominated for an Emmy award — made a call for greater diversity in those getting television’s most prestigious award. “Scandal” star Kerry Washington stood at Carroll’s side during the speech — although nominated for the Best Actress in a Drama award, Washington did not win. Claire Danes instead took that honor for “Homeland.”

None of this sat well with Pompeo, who happens to star in one of TV’s most diverse programs. “I’m extremely proud of our very, very diverse cast which represents the world that I walk around in every day,” she explained.

Like so many other aspects of reality, it seems that diversity still needs to reach this everyday world.
