emerald city nbc poster 'Emerald City' gets canned by NBC before Season 1 premiere

It looks like Dorothy will be staying home after all. NBC has pulled the plug on it’s “Wizard of Oz” series “Emerald City,” Deadline reports.

The network had originally ordered 10 episodes of the series, which is described as “a modern and dark re-imagining of the classic tale of Oz in the vein of ‘Game of Thrones,’ drawing upon stories from Baum’s original 14 books that include lethal warriors, competing kingdoms, and the infamous wizard as we have never seen before.” The show would have followed a 20-year old Dorothy as she lands in the middle of an epic battle for the control of Oz.
The trouble allegedly started when NBC and showrunner Josh Friedman had a difference of opinion on exactly what the show would be, despite having a pilot and several backup scripts produced.
Deadline’s report also says that Universal Television, the developing company, is still excited about the series and may try to shop it elsewhere.
