everest jump live canceled Everest Jump Live canceled by Discovery Channel after deadly avalancheIn the wake of a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest on Friday (April 18), the Discovery Channel has canceled the live Everest Jump that was scheduled for May 11.

The channel says in a statement, “In light of the overwhelming tragedy at Mount Everest and respect for
the families of the fallen, Discovery Channel will not be going forward
with Everest Jump Live. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole
Sherpa community.”

The avalanche left 13 people dead with three still unaccounted for. The Associated Press reports that most of the casualties were Sherpa guides, who make their living providing assistance and provisions to Everest climbers.

The Everest Jump Live was to have been a week-long event for Discovery, with five nights of programming leading up to climber Joby Ogwyn jumping off the summit of Everest in a wing suit on worldwide live TV. Since the avalanche, Ogwyn and his crew have been helping with the search-and-rescue efforts.

There is no word as to whether Discovery will schedule another live Everest jump at a later date.
