The “Firefly” comic book series, called “Serenity: Leaves on the Wind,” finally has a release date. The anticipated six-issue comic will hit store shelves on Jan. 29 and — surprise! — it’s going to be written by Zack Whedon.

The brother of Joss and Jed Whedon is taking up the “Firefly” torch, Nerdist reveals of the Dark Horse Comics series. It was already announced that Georges Jeanty is illustrating the series.

Whedon tells Nerdist he can “find [the ‘Firefly’] characters’ voices more easily, probably because I have so much existing material to draw from.” He adds, “The challenge is to create something that feels of a piece with the existing franchise … but the ‘Serenity’/’Firefly’ world is where I feel most confident.”

“Beyond that, the challenge is to make something good, something that feels like it is building on what is already there rather than just mimicking it,” he explains. “[‘Leaves on the Wind’ will] plow forward into the future of these characters and tell new stories which has been a lot of fun. … I know fans have been starving for story, so I don’t hold back in that regard.”

Other than early conversations, Joss — “Firefly’s” creator — hasn’t had much to do with this comic book series. “Leaves on the Wind” picks up about nine months after the events of the movie “Serenity” with the crew out in the middle of nowhere. Whedon says there won’t be many hijinks in this comics run because the crew of the Serenity is “too ‘almost dying’ for that.”

“I sincerely hope that someone will take the baton when I am done,” Whedon says of the future of the “Serenity” comic. “I am leaving a lot on the table to play with and resolve. I think it would be amazing if the book was passed from writer to writer, each one putting their stamp on it, telling the stories they wanted to see in the series.”
