ioan gruffudd forever abc 'Forever' creator isn't concerned about 'New Amsterdam' comparisonsABC’s new drama “Forever” centers on a New York City medical examiner (Ioan Gruffudd) who’s also immortal. He uses his experience from his long, long life — 200-plus years — to help solve the cases he’s presented.

If that sounds familiar, that’s because it’s fairly similar to the premise of “New Amsterdam,” a FOX series that starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (pre-“Game of Thrones”) and lasted only a handful of episodes in 2008.

“Forever” creator Matt Miller says he hadn’t heard of the previous show while he was developing his series, detailing how the idea came to him after his young son asked if he would ever die.

“It came up when I was pitching the show,” Miller says at the TV critics’ summer press tour. When the pilot pickup was announced, various Internet commenters noted the similarities.

“I had not seen the show ‘New Amsterdam,'” Miller adds. “I understand in hindsight that it was on FOX. FOX actually made an offer on [‘Forever’], but ultimately ABC felt like a better home for it. But [FOX] didn’t see it as being too similar.”

“Forever” premieres at 10 p.m. ET/PT Monday, Sept. 22 on ABC and moves to its regular home at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23.
