“Forever” may not last until eternity, but it will see the end of the 2014-15 TV season. ABC has picked up the drama for nine additional episodes to continue investigating allowing Dr. Henry Morgan to figure out the secret of his immortality.
Morgan, played by Ioan Gruffudd, is a star New York City medical examiner who was born 200 years ago. He studies the bodies he finds not only to solve cases but to help him figure out why he’s stayed alive so long. Throughout the series he has to find ways to keep his partner Jo (Alana de la Garza) from finding out his immortal secret.
The decision may be surprising to many considering the drama’s performance compared to ABC’s other freshman drama — “How to Get Away with Murder,” which got a full-season order in early October. While “HTGAWM” has the benefit of being part of ABC’s TGIT line-up, “Forever” has proved itself to be a viable DVR show, with an average of 7.9 million viewers in Live +7 ratings.
Dramas overall are faring better so far this season than comedies. “Manhattan Love Story” and “Utopia” are the only shows so far to be pulled completely off the air. NBC decided not to give extra episodes to “A to Z” and “Bad Judge,” and ABC opted to go the same route with its freshman comedy “Selfie.”
“Forever” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
