In a statement from his agent, it was announced that British actor Frank Thornton died Saturday. The actor passed away in his sleep at 92 years old, Reuters reports. Thornton was a comedy veteran, starring in many British TV shows, but will be most remembered as Captain Stephen Peacock on the BBC program “Are You Being Served?”
The sitcom ran for 13 years, from 1972-1985, with Thornton being one of only five actors appearing in every episode. In addition to being well-known in the UK, “Are You Being Served?” became an American hit, airing on PBS. Thornton returned to the character in the early 1990’s for a short-lived sequel series, “Are You Being Served? Again!”
Thornton was also known for his role on “Last of the Summer Wine,” in which he appeared in 135 episodes, until the show ended in 2010. He is survived by his wife Beryl, who he was married to for 67 years, as well as his daughter, and three grandchildren.
