sean bean2 game of thrones 'Game of Thrones' gets a second season on HBOThat didn’t take long: Less than 48 hours after the series premiere, HBO has ordered a second season of “Game of Thrones.”

The pickup comes after Sunday’s (April 17) premiere drew strong reviews and a decent-sized but not spectacular audience of 2.2 million viewers. A pair of replays later in the night pushed the total up to 4.2 million; multiple replays also aired on Monday night.

“We are delighted by the way [executive producers] David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin‘s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo says. “This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”

“Game of Thrones” is the first fantasy series HBO has tried. Its closest counterpart might be “True Blood,” which premiered to 1.4 million viewers in 2008 and slowly built over its first season before making a big leap in its second.

There’s no word yet on when the series goes back into production or when Season 2 will air.
