game of thrones meereen episode 3 breaker of chains daario strong belwas hbo 'Game of Thrones' Michiel Huisman explains why Daario got Strong Belwas' best sceneFans of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels likely noticed something a little familiar about Daario Naharis’ urination scene in “Game of Thrones” Season 4, episode 3, “Breaker of Chains.” It was a scene that also took place in the “A Storm of Swords” novel, except there was defecation instead of urination, and a different character performed the act.

In the novels, it’s a character named Strong Belwas — a massive eunuch formerly of the fighting pits of Meereen who allies himself with Daenerys Targaryen — who is made Dany’s champion in her show of force against Meereen. After winning the fight, he relieves his bowels as an insult to the rulers of Meereen. Since Strong Belwas was cut from the TV series, it was decided that Daario would get to perform a slightly tweaked version of Belwas’ most epic scene instead.

“I talked about that with [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] at some point, and they just loved the scene so much, so they thought, ‘We’ve got to use it at some point,'” Michiel Huisman, who plays Daario, tells Zap2it. “I think it creates a great opportunity to show Daario’s loyalty and his abilities in front of Dany. I loved doing it also.”

Since Daario is becoming an increasingly significant character in “Game of Thrones” Season 4, Huisman says this was a key way to prove just how talented Daario is with his arakh.

“[The scene] gets the character so nicely,” he says. “I always imagine that if you’re such a brilliant warrior like Daario is, you try to get the most effect with expending the least possible energy, because you might possibly have to do it 200 more times after you take down the first guy. So you have to be very tiger-like.

“It’s just brilliantly written; it’s so brutal and before you know it, it’s over. Honestly, I couldn’t believe they were allowing me to be this cool. Like, really? I get to come to work today and do this? Really? OK, that’s good.”

“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. Did you like the way Daario got Strong Belwas’ scene?
