The “Game of Thrones” 15-minute Season 4 special, “Ice and Fire: A Foreshadowing,” premiered on HBO on Feb. 9, and was loaded with a number of exciting moments from the new season. Watch the special here, and read on for a breakdown of the teases that got our hearts pumping.
10. These are Tyrion’s most dangerous episodes
A number of key Tyrion scenes were shown in this special, from him on trial and Cersei testifying against him to him having some serious discussions with Jaime in a prison cell. While it’s clear that the Lannister sibling dynamic will be a big part of Season 4 with Jaime’s love and Cersei’s hate for Tyrion pulling them apart, it will still be Tyrion’s most dangerous season yet.
“Tyrion has never been faced with this much public humiliation because he usually has an answer for it,” Peter Dinklage says. “This time around he’s left as an audience member.”
9. Sam and Jon are reunited
The fan-favorite members of the Night’s Watch will finally get back together in Season 4, though not without some drama. “Sam and Jon’s relationship is as even and equal as it’s ever been,” John Bradley says. Kit Harington adds, “I think without Sam, Jon would crumble.”
8. Jack Gleeson likes being bad
Though Jack Gleeson has some very strong feelings about celebrity culture, he does like to rile viewers up. “To get the reaction out of someone is very satisfying,” he says. “It’s nice to make people hate you.”
7. Brienne and Margaery will have girl time
Brienne is still hanging out at King’s Landing, which means the strongest female knight will get to meet up with one of the the strongest female politicians, Margaery Tyrell. One quick shot of the two of them walking together through the gardens of the castle is one of our favorites from the special.
6. Episode 9 won’t be the huge climax
Apparently there is going to be more than one huge episode in Season 4. “There are more climactic events in Season 4 than there have ever been before,” co-showrunner David Benioff says.
5. Jon is distraught over breaking his vows to Ygritte
If you thought Jon Snow was sad before, that’s going to be nothing compared to how viewers will find him in Season 4. As Harington explains, Jon finds himself having broken his vows to both the Night’s Watch and Ygritte.
That will be a point of contention between Jon and Sam, and one scene showed Sam calling Jon out about the fact Ygritte being one of the people attacking the Wall. “Jon is in lose-lose position,” Harington says.
4. The battle at the Wall will be a huge undertaking
Though there wasn’t much discussed about the battle between the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings up at the Wall, that footage all looks amazing. A number of different fight sequences were shown with Styr the Magnar of Thenn leading the charge in some places and Jon Snow leading them in others. People who complain about the lack action in “Game of Thrones” will be biting their tongues in Season 4.
3. Daenerys gets a throne room but needs to earn it
Dany’s throne room was revealed in the special, and it’s quite an interesting contrast to the Iron Throne room. But if Daenerys is going to be a glorified queen, she needs to prove she can be a ruler. Instead of continuing her conquest to Westeros, she decides to stay and rule the free Slaver’s Cities she’s freed instead.
“She’s exploring what kind of a leader she can be,” Emilia Clarke says.
2. The Royal Wedding is going to be epic
A whole lot of footage was shown from the wedding between Joffrey and Margaery, so it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of secrecy about the fact that their union will take place. All of the actors were gushing about how massive the scale will be, with Natalie Dormer saying she doubts she’ll ever participate in a wedding this big in her life. The entire undertaking of filming the wedding, which looks phenomenal based on the footage shown, was likened to making a short film. Get stoked.
1. The dragons are huge and angry
Whoamygoodness, let’s talk about that final reveal of Dany’s dragons. They. Are. Huge. And book viewers should realize that the scene shown at the end of the special is a very significant one in Dany’s arc.
“They’ve killed her enemies, what’s going to stop them from killing anyone,” Clarke says. “I think it’s kind of a symbol of her losing control of herself and losing control of what she’s doing.”
Other great moments:
Theon is back: And imprisoned and horrified and still being tortured by Ramsay Bolton, who for whatever reason has been whipped across his chest in the scene we see him in. Maybe he’s a masochist? Whatever the cause, poor Reek.
Brienne + Jaime 4eva: Brienne and Jaime ‘shippers rejoice, because these two had an adorable moment in the special. Jaime presents Brienne with a new suit of armor, which in her life is probably as good as giving her a ring.
Oberyn and Ellaria makeout session: There was a good deal of time introducing Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper, in this special, but the best moment with him was when he and lover Ellaria Sand were totally macking on one another in front of someone else (Tyrion?). If Cersei thought Margaery was risqué, wait until she meets these two.
Meereen. Just Meereen: The newest Slaver City Dany comes to is huge and imposing and simply stunning CGI. That, like the dragon scene, was one of the most gorgeous moments of the special.
Thoughts on Joffrey: “Joffrey’s a wee prick,” Rory McCann says. Amazing. Clarke tempers that dislike by saying, “I feel like Jack the actor has an abundance of redeeming qualities.”
Maisie and Sophie are troublemakers: It’s no secret that Turner and Williams are best friends, but it turns out they become pranksters when they’re together as well. The pair reveals they take part in “knock-and-runs” on hotel room doors with their fellow actors in Belfast.
Dancing through life: In one outtake, Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau dance into the throne room where Tyrion is supposed to go on trial. Though it’s amazing to behold as a fan, the tired crew didn’t take so well to the stunt.
“Game of Thrones” Season 4 premieres on HBO on April 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
