kristin perry sandra stier same sex marriage california gi Gay marriages resume in California as appeals court lifts stayAs the rather exciting cap to a monumental week in equal rights, a federal appeals court allowed the state of California to immediately begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Friday (June 28).

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ended the four-and-a-half year freeze by dissolving a stay it had imposed on same-sex marriages while the lawsuit challenging Prop 8 worked its way through the legal system.

Following the ruling, CA Governor Jerry Brown issued a statement to county clerks that marriage licenses must be issued effective immediately. The two lead plaintiffs in the case to overturn Prop 8, Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier, were first in line at San Francisco City Hall to get a marriage license. State Attorney General Kamala Harris officiated the ceremony (pictured above), telling the couple, “I now declare you spouses for life.”

KGO-TV in San Francisco reports that the SF City Hall will remain open until 8 p.m. on Friday and open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday to issue marriage licenses. The city’s gay pride weekend, also taking place over the weekend, just got a little more special.
