george lopez its not me hbo 325 'George Lopez: It's Not Me, It's You' 'To really be effective, you have to be edgy'

Zap2it: What’s your main thought about doing your third live stand-up HBO?special, “George Lopez: It’s Not Me, It’s You” (Saturday, July 14)?

George Lopez: I am probably the only person who still does them live. It scares a lot of people, but I’m a big fan of boxing, and you don’t get knocked out and get back in and say, “Let me try that again. That didn’t work out too well the first time.” I believe that doing it live the night of the show is more compelling and more exciting.
Zap2it: You’ve had so many different identities – including your current one as a dating contest host on FOX’s “Take Me Out” – is doing stand-up material the most comfortable one for you?
George Lopez: I’ve been the family sitcom guy and the talk show guy, but inside of me is still the comedian … and to really be effective, you have to be edgy. I’m trying to trust that again, because a lot of times, you have to knock that down for advertisers and people you’re responsible to. I’d like to forget all of that and just go and be myself, like I was before I made it.
Zap2it: How do you look back at your experience hosting the weeknight TBS talk show “Lopez Tonight”?

George Lopez: Doing a talk show was something I’d never imagined. Being as much a fan of Johnny Carson as I was, and having been on “Late Show With David Letterman” and all those shows, it was fun to do. That’s kind of a lifetime gig, though, and I’m not sure I would have wanted to do that for the rest of my life.
