George R.R. Martin joins Twitter: Insert joke about killing characters hereApparently “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin has had enough of parody social media accounts, because he finally took the plunge and joined Twitter. It’s been confirmed to Zap2it that @GRRMspeaking is Martin’s official Twitter account.

Of course, chances are that Martin will tweet about as often as he puts out an “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel (which is to say, not often).

As news spread about his new Twitter account, seemingly everyone and their “Game of Thrones”-loving mother made jokes about him killing off his Twitter characters. Considering the fact that there is a higher death toll on the TV series than in the books, can’t we all agree to consider showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss the bloodthirsty ones now?
Martin’s decision to make a Twitter account came less than two weeks after he used his LiveJournal blog — previously the best way to keep up-to-date with the author and his NFL musings — to shoot down another fake Twitter account.
“I seem to have to repeat this every year or so. Okay, sure. There are always folks who come in late, who never got the memo. Anyway … I AM NOT ON FACEBOOK. I AM NOT ON TWITTER,” he wrote on May 27. “I have a website, and I have this Not A Blog, right here on Live Journal, and every so often (rarely) I post on other people’s blogs and websites, or on certain bulletin boards and news / discussion sites. But that’s it for my internet presence.”

Time to bite your tongue, Mr. Martin. Now, to use this new Twitter presence to at long last announce “The Winds of Winter” …
