Former President George W. Bush underwent heart surgery this morning (Aug. 6). A blocked artery was discovered in the 67-year-old’s heart during a routine checkup, and his doctors recommended he have an operation on it.

A statement released by Bush’s office reads, “The procedure was performed successfully this morning, without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday.” The blockage was resolved by having a stent placed in the artery.

“[Bush] is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him. He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes. And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups,” the statement concludes.
