phil robertson duck dynasty return glaad gi GLAAD responds to Phil Robertson's 'Duck Dynasty' return

In a somewhat surprising move, A&E announced on Dec. 27 that it had changed its mind and reversed Phil Robertson‘s “Duck Dynasty” suspension. The network decided to let the Robertson patriarch return to the reality series when it starts filming again in the spring.

A&E says in a statement that it made the decision after “consulting with numerous advocacy groups.” Even with that as the case, GLAAD has a response for the network about the message this sends to people about A&E’s views on African Americans and homosexuals.

“Phil Robertson should look African American and gay people in the eyes and hear about the hurtful impact of praising Jim Crow laws and comparing gay people to terrorists. If dialogue with Phil is not part of next steps then A&E has chosen profits over African American and gay people — especially its employees and viewers,” GLAAD says in a statement.

GLAAD was quick to respond to Robertson’s statements in the now-infamous GQ interview, and it applauded A&E for its reaction in suspending Robertson. The network now says in its statement that it reinstated Robertson because “Duck Dynasty” is a show about the entire Robertson family.

“‘Duck Dynasty’ is not a show about one man’s views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family … a family that America has come to love,” A&E says. “As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about.”

Do you think A&E made the right choice in allowing Robertson back on “Duck Dynasty”?
